Songs Change, Memories Unchanged

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Always Something There to Remind Me.”

Today’s daily prompt is (thankfully) very good. I had to write a post based on the daily prompt for Blogging101 and I somehow couldn’t bring myself to write on any of the recent prompts given. I was kind of depending on this prompt to be good and here it is! Yay. Okay so, back to the post.

Songs which bring up memories…? Hmm. Well to be honest, rather than memories, most songs actually bring about this weird array of thoughts and scenes which haven’t actually happened, but still make me think about them. It’s basically like, most of the time, I think about scenes which haven’t happened, but I secretly want them to happen. And these so called ‘scenes’ range from the simplest, most basic things to big dreams and aims I have in life.

Anyway, there definitely are a few songs which make me think about past memories, good and bad both. (I should inform you here that I’ll add Hindi songs too and if you don’t know/understand Hindi, then you’re free to skip over that part of the post.)

Here comes the playlist…

1. Fire Meet Gasoline by Sia

This song, I have no idea why, always reminds me of the snow-capped mountains of Kashmir. I visited Kashmir this year itself, and this song too, was released at around that time. I listened to this song on loop all through the tour and since then, it’s been stuck in my head! I’ve eaten maggi listening to this song, on the top of a snowy mountain. I’ve fallen asleep listening to song, covered in comforters, on those cold days of Kashmir. It doesn’t make much sense, but then, nothing makes sense in the world.

2. Bad Blood – Taylor Swift

This song always brings back memories of an especially violent fight I had with a guy in school. I had found out that the guy had been bitching about me behind my back, and me in my fury, had gone ahead and told him exactly what I felt about people like him. That guy hasn’t talked to me again till this day.

3. Sugar – Maroon 5

This reminds me of our 10th std school farewell. It was such a beautiful, joy-filled day. I don’t think I’ve never known such a mixture of joy and sorrow, both, on the same day. I remember the weird dance steps we tried out in our saris, those ugly selfies, that amazing food, which was actually bad but tasted amazing, and that after-party. Words can’t express how much I miss those days, and this song brings it all back.

4. Smile – Mikky Ekko

It doesn’t really bring back memories. It just reminds me of the brightest smile of those around me. Whenever I listen to this song, it’s like I imagine the people I love happy, smiling their brightest smiles, and just, happy.

5. Dil Dhadakne Do – Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

This doesn’t bring up one particular memory, but a collection of fond, warm ones. I think of all the happy times with my friends, all those shared laughs, those tears shed together, and the helping hands we’ve always been for each other. Times have passed but things will never change.

And…this was it! That’s all I can remember for now. Thanks for reading!

That is exactly what I love about music! How it can make us feel so much and bring back so many memories? Not only bring back memories, but make us think and feel for things which haven’t even happened!

Memories and Hope is what makes life worth living. Keep dreaming, keep hoping. And some memories may want to keep us from hoping for a better future but we mustn’t remain in our bad memories. I like your style. Thanks for sharing.

There is a generation gap here. I don’t know any of those songs, but I can relate to your thoughts about them. You’ve motivated me to write about the songs of the 50’s. Yes, there is a generation gap in years, but perhaps not feellings. I like the way you put the songs in your post.

Yes, there definitely is a generation gap. I’m 16 years old, actually 🙂 But what matters is that I could motivate you to write, and it means a lot to me! Thank you so much.
